Minato Media Museum 2012

From August 5 to September 1, 2012, Zero by Zero presented two works at Minato Media Museum 2012 (MMM2012), a contemporary art project held along the Minato Line of Hitachinaka Seaside Railway in Ibaraki Prefecture.

White Dots Train transformed a retired railcar, Kiha 203, into a work of art. Punching boards were fitted to all of the car's windows, creating moiré patterns that shifted with the light and viewing angle. The beauty of natural phenomena — dappled sunlight, falling snow, shimmering water — was rendered through a grid of small white dots.

Brilliant Noise was an installation placed on the platform of Nakaminato Station. Incandescent bulbs responded to voices, passing cars, and the sound of trains, glowing with every sound the station made. It was an expansion of the earlier "Brilliant Noise" installation first shown at Kobe Biennale 2011.

The Hitachinaka and Nakaminato area had suffered significant tsunami damage in the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake. Zero by Zero was glad to contribute to the region's recovery through art.
